BCSH Process

The British Committee for Standards in Haematology oversees the whole process of guideline development. The committee comprises a Chair (Dr Trevor Baglin), Secretary (Dr Drew Provan), the Chairs of the four Task Forces, the chair of the Clinical and Laboratory Practice subcommittee, the BSH Treasurer, the BSH Scientific Secretary and two ordinary members of the BSH.

The BCSH produces guidance in various formats:
Evidence-Based Guideline with Systematic Review: an evidence-based guideline developed by primary systematic review by the BCSH. Evidence-Based Guideline: a guideline referencing other previously published evidence-based guidelines produced by systematic review, for example international guidelines. Guidance and Recommendations can also be produced. These are shorter documents in relation to defined aspects of clinical and laboratory practice for which there is a weak evidence base but for which a degree of consensus or uniformity is likely to be beneficial to patient care.

Individual guidelines are developed by one of four Task Forces, which cover the different subject areas within haematology: Haemato-oncology (diagnosis and management of malignant haematological disease), General Haematology (diagnosis and management of non-malignant haematological disorders), Haemostasis & Thrombosis and Blood Transfusion. Guidelines are drafted by writing groups following a procedure for guidelines commissioned by the BCSH which endeavours to involve all relevant stakeholders and ensures review of draft guidelines by a wide spectrum of UK haematologists who act as 'sounding boards'. This process is being continually refined and if you think there is room for further improvement please contact us. Any clinical and laboratory issues that are relevant to the BCSH but are not already dealt with by the four Task Forces come under the remit of the Clinical and Laboratory Practice subcommittee.
